ANIMATIC

For a assignment of semester one, I finished the animatic for the animation film. I found some sound for example drop, bird, forest to put into my animatic. I learn to use timeline to export a series of jpg then import them into Premiere for a cut.

I intend to make a stop motion film, the film does not take a long time. The animatic is a example before the animation film, and I can find shortage from it, there to avoid challenges during making film.

I prefer to make animation for children and I do some research about children, including nature of children, behavior and motives of children. Children always like colorful picture and simple character. During the research I watched a cartoon named PEPPA PIG. It a series of cartoon for children aged 3-7years old. I think it is a great Animation industry model to learn.

The character is a pig family and the stories are very close to daily life. It is very popular for children. The first time I know Peppa Pig was from a cover of cup cake. It means that in addition to episode DVDs, a variety of licensed Peppa Pig products are available, including video games and other toys such as playsets, playing cards, vehicles, and stuffed toys. The line has also been expanded to include household items such as bathroom products, bed-linens, food, drink, clothing, and jewellery. Licensees include Holland Publishing in the United Kingdom. I think PEPPPA PIG is a great example for children animation production. No matter from the angle of animation or from the angle of business.

CHARACTER DESIGNS

For the character design, I do some research about caterpillar. As the main character is a ugly caterpillar, it should be ugly different from others but cute. Otherwise it could be hard to be accepted. It should have long arms, shot legs and big eye which easy to change phiz. So I make the character connected with 5 balls and colored with different colors.

I looked up some good designs of insects, then make my own design. Other caterpillars are normal and simple. I created them green bodies and round heads. But I looked the cocoon design as a sweet design. The film will be ended in the picture of cocoon on the tree.

STORY BOARD COLOR

After the storyboard I colored the black and white storyboard. It is the work before animatic. And it can decide the color style for the animation. This film is made for children, I prefer the color is brightness and vivid which is easy to be loved by children.

I use photoshop and tablelet to draw the storyboard. I found it easier to chose color and copy picture than draw on paper.

STORY BOARD

Here is the storyboard for my story. I try to make the characters and content easy to be accepted by children, cause I want express a positive theme. Actually, the storyboard is a draft of animation. It can illustrate the rhythm and style.

DRAWING

For the research, I do a lot of drawing work both on paper and on computer. I get a change to practice my drawing skill from the script breakdown and storyboard. On my college time, I used to do some storyboard, but a little different from this time. We used to express grammar of shotsby some particular marks and use little language description. Usually, it is very simple and I never do a script breakdown. At first I thought it takes time and useless. Soon I found it would make job easier though careful drawing. 

SCRIPT BREAKDOWN

Script breakdown is showing shot changes on paper. I read 'Grammar of Shot 'to learn how to use shot. Grammar of shot includes shot perspective, Camera Angles and line of action. Normally used grammar of shot are pan, track, establish shot, full shot, medium shot, medium close up and extreme close up. From the small pictures and a brief comment it is clear to see the shot changes.
