CHARACTER DESIGNS

For the character design, I do some research about caterpillar. As the main character is a ugly caterpillar, it should be ugly different from others but cute. Otherwise it could be hard to be accepted. It should have long arms, shot legs and big eye which easy to change phiz. So I make the character connected with 5 balls and colored with different colors.

I looked up some good designs of insects, then make my own design. Other caterpillars are normal and simple. I created them green bodies and round heads. But I looked the cocoon design as a sweet design. The film will be ended in the picture of cocoon on the tree.

STORY BOARD COLOR

After the storyboard I colored the black and white storyboard. It is the work before animatic. And it can decide the color style for the animation. This film is made for children, I prefer the color is brightness and vivid which is easy to be loved by children.

I use photoshop and tablelet to draw the storyboard. I found it easier to chose color and copy picture than draw on paper.

STORY BOARD

Here is the storyboard for my story. I try to make the characters and content easy to be accepted by children, cause I want express a positive theme. Actually, the storyboard is a draft of animation. It can illustrate the rhythm and style.

DRAWING

For the research, I do a lot of drawing work both on paper and on computer. I get a change to practice my drawing skill from the script breakdown and storyboard. On my college time, I used to do some storyboard, but a little different from this time. We used to express grammar of shotsby some particular marks and use little language description. Usually, it is very simple and I never do a script breakdown. At first I thought it takes time and useless. Soon I found it would make job easier though careful drawing. 

SCRIPT BREAKDOWN

Script breakdown is showing shot changes on paper. I read 'Grammar of Shot 'to learn how to use shot. Grammar of shot includes shot perspective, Camera Angles and line of action. Normally used grammar of shot are pan, track, establish shot, full shot, medium shot, medium close up and extreme close up. From the small pictures and a brief comment it is clear to see the shot changes. 

SCRIPT

I have worked in primary school when I found that some children always laughed at others who were not as good as them. And these children whom be laughed always lacked of confidence on their work. I tried to encourage them but it seems not work. I tried stop the children laugh at others. It leaded me to think about the behavior of children and the influence of  experience for children's future. So I intend to make a film about children's behavior and this film willed be intended to help children build up confidence and teach them how to face to setback. I intend to make a film about children's behavior and how can they see the world.This film will suit for children around 5 to 12 years old. It will be made by stop motion and the frame will be colorful which can attract children.

This is a story about a caterpillar who was very ugly. No one liked him and other caterpillars always laughed at him.

To become a butterfly they have to knit a pair of wings. He wanted to make the most beautiful wings that he thought no one would laugh at him. He worked hard and he succeeded. All of the caterpillars came to look at his wings. They were envious and asked him to try to fly. But he could not fly with the wings. So others laughed him again. Whereas, he did not give up and worked harder to improve his wings.

He finished and flied to the sky. He find the world so beautiful that he never enjoyed before. He had deep breath and look around the earth. He felt all the endeavor was worthful. No one laughed at him. But he found no one noticed him because all the butterflies became weak and old. Actually, the life span of butterfly is several days. So several days later, they were going to die.

He found the meaning of life that everyday should be cherished, work hard and do not give up when some body laugh at you.
